Moore, co-founder of the Monday/Wednesday/Friday Video Club and a member of the artists’ group Colab, the two-month-long exhibition operated as an open-door, artist-centered media archiving project. After the exhibition closed, Colab member Andrea Callard and moving-image archivists Rebecca Fraimow, Julia Kim, and Kristin MacDonald formed the XFR Collective as a small non-profit organization in 2014. The organization has since recruited a wider membership and today continues its mission to digitize video materials in order to preserve images recorded on obsolete formats that would otherwise be lost.

The show “Lungs of Sugar” dedicates a stage to sound and ornament. It wishes to approach their qualities - repetition, adornment and processuality - in relation to notions of artistic production, spatio-temporal perception as well as positioning towards our surroundings.

Un canto o richiamo. Chi parla?

Dan Strieble and Mike Mashon were the master planners. One highlight was having the Library staff pitch in to create live accompaniment for silent films.

Callard shared Music in Loop Patterns, 1975 by Reese Williams.
During 2015, twelve pieces were digitized: six letters on audio cassette between herself and Williams and six compositions on 1/4 track tape by Williams, several made with the Buchla synthesizer, all from the period of 1974-77. Many thanks to Pamela Vizner, Walter Forsberg, Bleakley McDowell, and Jasmyn Castro who each helped get this done. Listen to one at www.reesewilliams.net.

Genevieve Havemeyer-King and Pamela Oyarce presented the story of the NYU MIAP/BB Optics preservation of Some Food May Be Found in the Desert (Callard 1976) and we saw the preserved version with the audio Pamela and Callard recreated for 16mm film. See the still below, NYC in a grime-y time.

We also saw a funny experiment by Colorlab, the sound test film that originally came with Callard's Elmo Super 8mm projector output as a 35mm print and many other gems. Brodsky & Treadway had pulled the sound off the Super 8mm and so it sounded really good.
If you have DV or VHS tapes that you want to see again, find the link on this post and send in the form for participation.
This is the XFR Collective's first effort to digitize in public and it is a new, more portable set up.
It is a great thing that we all love working together and get plenty accomplished.
This program’s inspiration is the recent rebirth of one of the first motion pictures ever made, Edison Kinetoscopic Record of a Sneeze, January 7, 1894 (aka Fred Ott’s Sneeze). Although its copyrighted images appeared in print in 1894, the Sneeze was not seen in motion until reanimated on 16mm film in 1953. However, only now has the entire recording been reproduced. The new Library of Congress version reveals The Sneeze to be nearly twice as long as presumed, with Mr. Ott sneezing twice in one unedited take. This is its premier public run.

Members of Collaborative Projects, Inc. (COLAB) collaboratively made live and prerecorded television for public access cable TV between 1978 and 1985. The works were broadcast as from Jim Chladek’s ETC Studios on 23rd Street which later became Manhattan Neighborhood Network. The shows were All Color News, Potato Wolf, and Red Curtain. Many of the taped shows were later gathered for distribution by Alan W. Moore, Sophie Vieille, and Michael Carter to distribute through COLAB's Monday/Wednesday/Friday Video Club during 1986-2000. Andrea Callard and Coleen Fitzgibbon began to preserve these materials in 2006 in collaboration with Moore. http://235bowery.s3.amazonaws.com/exhibitionlinks/91/XFRSTN_Artists%27Texts_pdf.pdf
Working independently, avant-garde and experimental filmmakers have pushed the limits and broken the rules of traditional filmmaking to create their own personal works. Films selected for the NFPF’s most recent collection in its DVD series “Avant-Garde Treasures,” by Carolee Schneemann, Bruce Conner and Andrea Callard, will be presented on film along with a discussion of the particular challenges of preserving these unique, cutting-edge works.

Joe Babas (1945 - 2007) was an artist and inventor whose body of work was auctioned off for charity at 65 Saint Felix Street the year after his suicide. Babas' body was part prototype (memorabilia design for corporate entities, architectural proposals) and part variation (art). Like all bodies, Babas' was held together by the communication between its parts, like a mammal.

For "MODELS" Babas is joined by Dorian Mckaie, Jared Madere, Andrea Callard, and Jonah Susskind, with works that engage, combine, and disrupt the material reality and abstract potential of the model. References, processes, and postures are at once obvious and obscure, as each work simultaneously presents and provokes the modes of production, distribution, and identification it models.

Beginning in 1978, COLAB produced the All Color News, followed by Potato Wolf and Red Curtain. Many of those videotapes still exist, stored as the M/F/W Club materials or by individual artists. Coleen Fitzgibbon and I began digitizing COLAB TV shows in 2006 in collaboration with Alan W. Moore.

Please join us in the NM theater space at 7PM. The museum is free beginning at 7PM on Thursday nights. There are XFR STN events every Thursday at 7PM in the 5th floor gallery space.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-671657083789746087.post-31471937695438297852013-07-25T10:09:00.000-04:002013-07-25T10:09:14.400-04:00XFR STN
